Scientists are planning on building the world's largest telescope in Alpes de Haute Provence. The world's largest telescopes to date, located in Chile and Hawaii, have been only 10 meters long, but the one in Provence is going to be 0.5 to 1 kilometer long. It is expected to allow scientists to study planets outside our solar system, the details of stars, and the space around the black hole in the center of the galaxy. The mirrors will be adjusted very precisely (to the micron, which is a thousandth of a millimeter). The world's biggest telescopes to date have only been able to see stars as dots and no planets outside of the solar system, let alone a black hole in the center of the galaxy, so it is a very big deal to be able to see all of that for the first time. They are considering over a dozen sites to start building the telescope.
